A dating app is profiles, matching and chat, plus the part founders forget to budget: keeping members safe. Here is what an MVP of an app like Tinder needs, what it costs line by line on our price list, and what Apple and Google take.

Quick answer

**Test version: $7,000**, about 35 days: mobile web profiles, matching and live chat, with every profile approved by you. **Lean native MVP: $16,250**, 9 to 10 weeks: iOS and Android apps with photo uploads and screening, match emails, and a paid tier sold through in-app purchases. **Version 1 with custom brand design: $17,750**, 9 to 11 weeks.

All three are fixed prices from our [published price list](https://minidev.pro/mvp-cost-calculator#price-list). For the lean scope, a typical agency quote runs **$95,000 to $240,000 or more** by our estimate (see the [MVP development cost guide](https://minidev.pro/blog/mvp-development-cost-guide-2026)). On subscriptions sold through the apps, the stores keep about 15% in the cases we checked.

Every price below comes from our fixed price list, and every outside figure is in the sources. Other app types are in our [app cost breakdowns](https://minidev.pro/cost-to-build/).

## What an MVP of an App Like Tinder Actually Needs

The core loop: a member creates a profile, sees people nearby who fit their preferences, and likes or passes. In the words of Tinder's help center: swipe right to like someone, and if they like you back, it's a match. Only then can two people message, so the mutual-like gate is also the first safety feature: nobody gets a message they did not invite.

1. **Sign-up and profiles.** Email or phone sign-in, a check that members are adults, photos, a short bio and preferences: age range, distance and who they want to meet.
2. **Discovery.** A stack of profiles filtered by distance, age and preference, using approximate locations only.
3. **Like, pass and match.** The mutual-like rule, plus unmatch.
4. **Chat between matches.** Live messages with read and unread state.
5. **Safety tools.** Report, block and unmatch for members; a moderation queue for you; photo screening before photos go live.
6. **One paid tier.** For example more likes per day or seeing who liked you, sold as a subscription.

### What the real Tinder has that version one does not need

- **Three subscription tiers.** Tinder's help center names Plus, Gold and Platinum. Start with one paid tier and add more once you can see who pays, and for what.
- **Reach.** Tinder's newsroom counts over 100 billion connections across 185+ countries and 60+ languages. Version one needs one city and one language: density beats reach.
- **Ranking by behaviour.** Ordering profiles by what people respond to needs data you will not have at launch. Version one sorts by distance and recent activity.
- **A polished custom design.** Worth it once the loop works (our third version), not before.

## How Tinder Started

According to Tinder's own newsroom, Tinder was founded in 2012 at a hackathon at Hatch Labs, an incubator of IAC, and launched on a college campus in the United States, spreading quickly among young people from there. By 2014, Tinder says, it handled more than a billion swipes a day.

The useful part for your build is the campus. A dating app with 10,000 members spread across a country feels empty to every one of them; the same 10,000 in one city or one university feels busy. Tinder's first market was small and dense, and yours should be too.

## Price Breakdown: Three Versions, Line by Line

Every line is a fixed price from our [published price list](https://minidev.pro/mvp-cost-calculator#price-list); build days are working days. The calculator adds a range and a calendar timeline, and a call turns the range into one fixed quote.

### 1. Test version on mobile web: $7,000, about 35 days

| Item | What it covers | Price | Build days |
|---|---|---|---|
| **Base MVP** | Sign-up and login, profiles with one photo each, discovery with simple filters, like and match, database, Stripe checkout or a waitlist, an admin view to approve profiles and handle reports, landing page, deployment, 30 days of support | $5,000 | 20 |
| **Real-time** | Live chat between matches, with new-match and message alerts inside the app | +$2,000 | 3 |
| **Total** | | **$7,000** | **23** |

**Calculator estimate: $7,000 to $7,500, about 35 days.** [Open this build in the calculator](https://minidev.pro/mvp-cost-calculator?type=saas&features=realtime&design=clean&platform=web)

**What you do by hand in this version.** You approve every profile and photo before it goes live, and verify early members on a short video call. Reports come to you, answered the same day. You launch invite-only in one city or campus and open the doors once enough members have joined. The paid tier is a one-off Stripe checkout on the web: no app store fees and no app review yet. You can even hand-pick a few introductions each week, the Wizard of Oz approach: members see a product, you do the matching. The point is to learn whether people in one place will join, match and meet before you pay for native apps.

### 2. Lean native MVP: $16,250, 9 to 10 weeks

| Item | What it covers | Price | Build days |
|---|---|---|---|
| **Base MVP** | As in the test version: sign-up, profiles, discovery, like and match, admin view with a moderation queue, landing page, deployment, 30 days of support | $5,000 | 20 |
| **Real-time** | Live chat between matches, with in-app alerts | +$2,000 | 3 |
| **File processing** | Several photos per profile, with cropping, previews and an automatic screening step before a photo goes live | +$1,000 | 1 |
| **Email automation** | Welcome, new-match and unread-message emails | +$500 | 1 |
| **Subscription billing** | One paid tier: the plan, a free trial, upgrade screens and checks on what each member has paid for | +$1,000 | 2 |
| **In-app purchases (for example RevenueCat)** | Connects App Store and Google Play billing so the paid tier works inside the apps | +$750 | 1 |
| **Web + native mobile** | iOS and Android apps built with React Native | +$6,000 | 15 |
| **Total** | | **$16,250** | **43** |

**Calculator estimate: $16,500 to $19,500, 9 to 10 weeks.** [Open this build in the calculator](https://minidev.pro/mvp-cost-calculator?type=saas&features=realtime,files,notify,subscriptions&integrations=1&design=clean&platform=mobile)

Why in-app purchases: Apple's App Review Guidelines (3.1.1) say that to unlock features or functionality within your app, such as subscriptions, you must use in-app purchase. A service such as RevenueCat sits between your app and both stores' billing, so one set of code checks who has paid.

### 3. Version 1 with custom brand design: $17,750, 9 to 11 weeks

| Item | What it covers | Price | Build days |
|---|---|---|---|
| **Everything in the lean native MVP** | Version 2 above | $16,250 | 43 |
| **Custom brand design** | Designed screens in your brand before the build starts: onboarding, profile cards, the match moment and chat | +$1,500 | 2 |
| **Total** | | **$17,750** | **45** |

**Calculator estimate: $18,000 to $21,500, 9 to 11 weeks.** [Open this build in the calculator](https://minidev.pro/mvp-cost-calculator?type=saas&features=realtime,files,notify,subscriptions&integrations=1&design=custom&platform=mobile)

Dating is looks-first, so design earns its place sooner than in most software, but it still comes last: a beautiful app with nobody nearby is empty.

## Running Costs After Launch

**Fixed costs.** The Apple Developer Program is 99 USD per membership year, and organizations need a D-U-N-S Number to enroll. Google Play charges a one-time US$25 registration fee and verifies your identity.

**Store fees on subscriptions,** as published in November 2026:

- **Apple:** 15% on paid apps and in-app purchases under the App Store Small Business Program, for developers who earned up to $1 million in proceeds in the prior calendar year, and for developers new to the App Store.
- **Google Play:** in the US, UK and EEA, auto-renewing subscriptions carry a 10% service fee plus a 5% billing fee, effective June 30, 2026. In markets where the new fees have not rolled out, Google lists 15% for auto-renewing subscriptions.
- **Subscription length:** Apple requires an auto-renewable subscription to last at least seven days (guideline 3.1.2(a)).

**Worked example.** Assumptions: 5,000 members in one city; 1,500 open the app daily (under 500 at the evening peak); 200 pay $10 a month through the stores; about 6 emails per member a month. Each daily member sends 20 chat messages and loads 20 MB of photos a day.

| Item | Arithmetic | Monthly cost |
|---|---|---|
| App store fees | 200 × $10 = $2,000 × 15% | $300 |
| Apple Developer Program | $99 ÷ 12 | $8.25 |
| Supabase Pro: database, sign-in, photos, chat | From $25. Chat: 1,500 × 20 × 30 = 900,000 messages, counted twice (sent and received) = 1.8 million, inside the 5 million included | $25 |
| Photo traffic (Supabase egress) | 1,500 × 20 MB × 30 = 900 GB; (900 − 250 included) × $0.09 | $58.50 |
| Email (Resend Pro) | 5,000 × 6 = 30,000 emails, inside 50,000 | $20 |
| Admin and landing page hosting (Vercel Pro) | $20 per developer seat | $20 |
| Photo screening (OpenAI moderation) | Free for OpenAI API users; accepts images | $0 |
| Push notifications (Firebase Cloud Messaging) | Firebase states there is no cost | $0 |
| **Total** | | **$431.75** |

Store fees are $300 of the total: $131.75 is everything else. Prices checked November 2026.

Two things are missing. RevenueCat's pricing page did not load when we checked, so check its free allowance and fees before you budget; building straight on Apple's and Google's billing avoids that fee but takes longer. And the biggest real cost is people reviewing reports and flagged photos every day. On the mobile web test, a $10 sale through Stripe checkout costs 2.9% + 30¢ = $0.59, against $1.50 in store fees.

## Timeline: The Lean Native MVP Week by Week

The lean native MVP is 43 build days, which the calculator shows as 9 to 10 weeks:

1. **Week 1:** scope, safety rules and screens agreed; skeleton deployed. Open the Apple and Google developer accounts in your company's name now, because Apple needs a D-U-N-S Number for organizations and Google verifies identity.
2. **Week 2:** sign-up, profiles, photo uploads and automatic screening.
3. **Week 3:** discovery with distance and preference filters, like and pass, matching.
4. **Week 4:** chat, block, report and unmatch, and your moderation queue.
5. **Weeks 5 and 6:** the iOS and Android apps in React Native, from onboarding to chat and push notifications.
6. **Week 7:** the paid tier with in-app purchases, emails and the admin view.
7. **Week 8:** testing on real devices through Apple's and Google's test tracks. Google requires new personal developer accounts to meet testing requirements before publishing.
8. **Weeks 9 and 10:** App Store and Google Play review, fixes, launch in your first city, handover of the source code and documentation, and 30 days of support.

## What Makes a Dating App Hard

1. **The cold start is local.** Members only care who is near them. Launch one city or campus at a time, keep a waitlist until there are enough people, and measure matches per member, not downloads.
2. **Trust and safety.** Fake profiles, scams and harassment arrive with your first users. Apple's guideline 1.2 requires apps with user-generated content to include a way to filter objectionable material, a way to report offensive content with timely responses, the ability to block abusive users, and published contact information. The same guideline says apps used mainly for random or anonymous chat, or for "hot-or-not" style objectification, do not belong on the App Store. Screening tools flag; a person decides.
3. **Location privacy.** Show rounded distances, never a position, and make sure nobody can narrow down where a member lives by checking their distance from several places.
4. **Store rules and review.** Subscriptions go through in-app purchase, every release is reviewed, and a rejected build moves your launch date. Age and dating rules differ by country, so take legal advice for each market you enter.

## When We Are Not the Right Choice

If your idea is really a game, with points, levels and mini-games and dating on top, it is a consumer mobile game, which we do not build. If version one depends on video dating, identity checks against government documents, or matching research nobody has tested, scope those with specialist providers before you choose a builder.

And if you have not yet found a few hundred people in one place who want this, run matchmaking events, a waitlist and a group chat first; our [step-by-step MVP guide](https://minidev.pro/blog/how-to-build-mvp-step-by-step-guide) starts with validating the idea. Our [fixed-price MVP service](https://minidev.pro/mvp-development) fits once the demand is there and you need a working product by a known date. If chat matters more than matching, the [team chat breakdown](https://minidev.pro/cost-to-build/app-like-slack) prices real-time messaging on its own. After launch, extra tiers and features run on our [Growth Partner retainer](https://minidev.pro/saas-development).

## Frequently Asked Questions

### How much does it cost to build an app like Tinder?

At minidev.pro, a lean native MVP of a dating app like Tinder costs $16,250 fixed: iOS and Android apps with profiles, matching, live chat, photo uploads, match emails and a paid tier through in-app purchases. A mobile web test version is $7,000, and the native version with custom brand design is $17,750. By our estimate, a typical agency quote for the lean scope is $95,000 to $240,000 or more.

### How long does it take to build an app like Tinder?

9 to 10 weeks for the lean native MVP, which is 43 working days of build time, including 15 days for the iOS and Android apps. The mobile web test version takes about 35 days. Leave room for App Store and Google Play review, and open your developer accounts in week one, since Apple needs a D-U-N-S Number for organizations.

### How much do Apple and Google take from dating app subscriptions?

About 15% in the cases we checked in November 2026. Apple charges 15% under its Small Business Program for developers with up to $1 million in proceeds in the prior calendar year. Google Play charges a 10% service fee plus a 5% billing fee on auto-renewing subscriptions in the US, UK and EEA, and lists 15% in markets where its new fees have not rolled out.

### How do dating apps keep users safe?

With tools and people together. Apple requires apps with user-generated content to filter objectionable material, let users report content with timely responses, block abusive users and publish contact details. In practice that means automatic photo screening, a moderation queue someone checks every day, rounded distances instead of locations, and profile verification. OpenAI's moderation model, which accepts images, is free for OpenAI API users.

### Should I launch a dating app on the web or as a native app?

Test on the mobile web, then build native apps. A web test costs $7,000 on our price list, needs no app review, and keeps payments on Stripe at 2.9% + 30¢ per charge instead of about 15% in store fees. Once members in one city are matching and paying, native apps add push notifications and the app store presence a dating product needs.
