Two sides, listings and matching on a fixed-price web MVP from $8,000. Payouts, search and messaging are priced line by line, and the delivery date goes in the agreement.

## What a marketplace MVP costs and includes

A marketplace MVP at minidev.pro starts at $8,000 fixed: the $5,000 base MVP plus the Marketplace add-on (+$3,000, +3 build days) for the second side, listings and matching. Most first versions also need Stripe Connect payouts (+$750), search and filters (+$750) and email alerts (+$500). Our example builds come to $10,000 to $13,500 and take about 40 to 50 days. To test demand first, a one-sided version where you list the supply and pay sellers by hand is $6,000, in 30 days or less.

## What you get

### Two sides in one product

Separate sign-up, accounts and screens for each side: guests and hosts, clients and providers, buyers and suppliers. This is what the Marketplace add-on adds.

### Listings and the transaction

Sellers create listings with the fields your market needs. Buyers find one and complete the money-making workflow: a booking, an order or a proposal, with matching rules agreed in week 1.

### Payments and an admin view

Stripe checkout and a basic admin view of users, listings and transactions are in the base MVP. Automatic seller payouts are the Stripe Connect integration (+$750). Until then, you can pay sellers by hand.

### Launch and handover

A landing page, production deployment, a recorded handover and 30 days of support. Once the final payment is made, the code and documentation are yours.

The usual stack is Next.js, TypeScript, Node.js and PostgreSQL, with Stripe for payments. Terms and the guarantee are on the main [fixed-price MVP development page](https://minidev.pro/mvp-development).

## Price, line by line

A services marketplace: clients find a provider, book and pay by card; the provider is paid out automatically, minus your fee.

| Item | What it covers | Price | Build days |
|---|---|---|---|
| **Base MVP** | Sign-up and login, the booking workflow, database, Stripe checkout, basic admin view, landing page, deployment, 30 days of support | $5,000 | 20 |

Calculator estimate: $10,000 to $11,500, about 40 days. [Open this build in the calculator →](https://minidev.pro/mvp-cost-calculator?type=marketplace&features=search,notify&integrations=1&design=clean&platform=web)

Why a range? The calculator rounds the list total to the nearest $500 and allows up to 30% more on add-ons for details we only learn on a call, which then sets one fixed price. Payment is 50% upfront and 50% on delivery.

## Example builds by marketplace type

Each opens in the calculator with the same options.

### Test version: one side by hand

You list the supply, buyers pay with Stripe checkout and you pay sellers by hand. $5,000 base + $1,000 file processing for photos = $6,000.

**Calculator: $6,000 to $6,500, 30 days or less.** [Open in the calculator →](https://minidev.pro/mvp-cost-calculator?type=saas&features=files&design=clean&platform=web)

### Rental marketplace (Airbnb-style)

Hosts and guests, search, photos, booking emails, Stripe Connect and a map. $5,000 + $3,000 marketplace + $750 search + $1,000 photos + $500 email + $1,500 for two integrations = $11,750.

**Calculator: $12,000 to $14,000, 40 to 45 days.** [Open in the calculator →](https://minidev.pro/mvp-cost-calculator?type=marketplace&features=search,files,notify&integrations=2&design=clean&platform=web) Breakdown: [cost to build an app like Airbnb](https://minidev.pro/cost-to-build/app-like-airbnb).

### Freelance marketplace (Upwork-style)

Job posts, proposals, live messaging, files, email alerts and Stripe Connect with payouts held until work is accepted. $5,000 + $3,000 marketplace + $750 search + $2,000 real-time + $1,000 files + $500 email + $750 integration = $13,000.

**Calculator: $13,000 to $15,500, 45 to 50 days.** [Open in the calculator →](https://minidev.pro/mvp-cost-calculator?type=marketplace&features=search,realtime,files,notify&integrations=1&design=clean&platform=web) Breakdown: [cost to build an app like Upwork](https://minidev.pro/cost-to-build/app-like-upwork).

### Delivery marketplace (DoorDash-style)

Menus, mobile web ordering and live order status, plus Stripe Connect, maps and SMS. $5,000 + $3,000 marketplace + $2,000 real-time + $750 search + $500 email + $2,250 for three integrations = $13,500.

**Calculator: $13,500 to $16,000, 45 to 50 days.** [Open in the calculator →](https://minidev.pro/mvp-cost-calculator?type=marketplace&features=realtime,search,notify&integrations=3&design=clean&platform=web) Breakdown: [cost to build an app like DoorDash](https://minidev.pro/cost-to-build/app-like-doordash).

## The cold start problem, and how a small first version handles it

Buyers will not come without sellers, and sellers will not stay without buyers. Andrew Chen, a general partner at Andreessen Horowitz and former head of rider growth at Uber, calls the hardest part of launching the cold start problem; his book shows how to build an "atomic network" that is just big enough to sustain itself. So start small.

### Pick one small market

One city, one category, one type of buyer. Twenty active sellers in a niche beat 500 thin listings across a country.

### Fill the hard side by hand

Recruit the first sellers yourself and create their listings with them, using the admin view in the base MVP.

### Be useful to one side alone

Give sellers a reason to log in before buyers arrive, such as a booking page they can share with their own customers.

### Match and pay by hand

Introduce early buyers to sellers yourself. Automate matching and payouts once the same steps repeat every day.

That is why the cheapest build here is a $6,000 one-sided test version. If buyers come, add the second side; if not, you learned it for $6,000, not $10,000 or more.

## Payouts and seller onboarding with Stripe Connect

Stripe Connect verifies sellers, splits each payment and pays sellers out. In the setup Stripe recommends for marketplaces:

### How the money moves

The customer pays the marketplace and sees your name on the receipt. You keep your fee; Stripe pays the rest to the seller's connected account, a Stripe account of their own with its own payout schedule.

### Seller onboarding

Stripe-hosted onboarding collects what Stripe needs to verify sellers, with no form to build, but works only in a web browser. Embedded onboarding stays in your product, with iOS and Android SDKs.

### When details go missing

Collect details up front or as sellers earn. If something required is missing at Stripe's deadline, features such as payouts are disabled until it arrives.

### Who carries the risk

Your marketplace pays Stripe's fees, handles refunds and disputes, and covers sellers' negative balances. Stripe points to its Radar tool for spotting risky accounts.

Payouts run daily on a rolling basis by default. You can switch a seller to weekly or manual payouts, hold funds until a job is done, or offer Instant Payouts, which typically arrive within 30 minutes, for a fee.

| Stripe fee (published US prices) | Amount |
|---|---|
| **Card payments** | 2.9% + 30¢ per successful transaction for domestic cards; +1.5% for international cards; +1% if currency conversion is needed |
| **Connect, when you set pricing for sellers** | $2 per monthly active account (a seller who received a payout that month) and 0.25% + 25¢ per payout sent |
| **Instant Payouts** | 1% of payout volume |
| **US 1099 tax forms** | $2.99 per form e-filed with the IRS, $1.49 per form e-filed with states, $2.99 per form mailed |

On a $100 booking with a 10% commission, the card fee alone is $3.20 ($2.90 + $0.30), about a third of your $10, so set your commission after Stripe's fees. Some setups have more line items; check Stripe's Connect pricing page.

Our Stripe Connect line covers seller onboarding, payouts and your fee on each payment. Held funds or partial refunds are agreed in week 1 and can add days.

## How a marketplace build runs

For the $10,000 services marketplace above, about 40 days:

### Week 1: Scope and rules

A signed Must / Later / Never scope for both sides, transaction rules (fees, cancellations, when sellers get paid), core screen designs and a deployed skeleton.

### Weeks 2 and 3: Both sides working

Seller sign-up and listings, buyer browsing and the booking flow, end to end on a staging site you can click through.

### Week 4: The money

Stripe checkout, Stripe Connect onboarding and payouts in test mode, and email alerts for both sides.

### Weeks 5 and 6: Polish and launch

Search, cancellations and refunds, the landing page, testing with your first real sellers, launch and the recorded handover.

The delivery date goes in the agreement. If we miss it without a scope change on your side, you get a full refund of fees paid plus $2,000. The [week-by-week MVP timeline](https://minidev.pro/blog/mvp-development-timeline-30-days) shows the 30-day version of this plan.

## When we are not the right choice

### Your model is standard

If it is listings, bookings and a commission with nothing unusual, a hosted builder such as Sharetribe lets you launch without code. Its pricing changelog lists a Live plan at $259 a month, or $199 billed yearly. Build custom when your rules outgrow it; our [no-code vs custom MVP guide](https://minidev.pro/blog/no-code-vs-custom-mvp) covers the trade-off.

### You cannot name your first sellers

Software does not fix the cold start problem. If you cannot list the first 20 sellers who will be live on day one, spend the budget on recruiting them first.

### The money rules come first

If the model depends on holding funds for long periods, lending, insurance or other regulated payments, that design has to come before the software.

### Everything is a must-have

Three or more user types, native apps for each and a full back office in version one is a bigger project; we will cut it down in week 1 or say so. Enterprise RFPs needing 50+ engineers are not a fit.

## Questions founders ask about marketplace MVPs

### How much does it cost to build a marketplace MVP?

At minidev.pro a marketplace MVP starts at $8,000 fixed: the $5,000 base MVP plus the $3,000 Marketplace add-on for two sides, listings and matching. With Stripe Connect payouts (+$750), search and filters (+$750) and email alerts (+$500), a services marketplace is $10,000. Our rental, freelance and delivery examples come to $11,750 to $13,500 on the price list.

### How long does it take to build a marketplace MVP?

About 35 days for the marketplace core alone, and about 40 to 50 days once payouts, search, messaging and alerts are added, according to our calculator. The Marketplace add-on adds 3 build days to the base MVP's 20, and each extra adds its own days, shown before you sign. The delivery date goes in the agreement.

### How do sellers get paid in a marketplace?

With Stripe Connect, one integration line (+$750) on our price list. The customer pays the marketplace, the marketplace keeps its fee and Stripe pays the rest to the seller's bank account, daily by default or on a schedule you set. Sellers complete Stripe's onboarding so Stripe can verify them. The marketplace pays Stripe's fees and handles refunds and disputes.

### How do you solve the chicken-and-egg problem in a marketplace?

Start small enough to fill one side yourself. Pick one city or one category, recruit the first sellers by hand and create their listings with them, and match early buyers manually if you need to. A cheaper first version helps: a one-sided web app at $6,000, where you list the supply and pay sellers by hand, leaves more budget for recruiting.

### Does a marketplace MVP need a mobile app?

Usually not at first. A responsive web app works on phones, and every example on this page is web only. Native iOS and Android apps add $6,000 and 15 build days, plus two app store reviews. Add them when a core action needs the phone, such as live location for couriers or alerts that sellers must answer quickly.

### Should I use a marketplace builder instead of custom development?

If your model is standard listings, bookings and a commission, a hosted builder is cheaper to start: Sharetribe's pricing changelog lists a Live plan at $199 a month billed yearly. Build custom when your rules are the product, such as unusual pricing, matching or payout timing, or when you want to own the code, which is yours once the final payment is made.
