Quick answer

If you have a technical lead and want a pre-screened developer, the closest alternatives to Toptal are Arc (freelancers at $15 to $110+ an hour, risk-free trial of up to two weeks), Lemon.io (published median rates of about $23 to $81 an hour, a 20-hour prepaid trial), Gun.io (contract-to-hire) and Turing (no-risk two-week trial, rates not published). Andela suits large companies building teams. Upwork and Contra are open marketplaces where you do the vetting, and Fiverr Pro sells defined deliverables with a refund guarantee.

If nobody on your side can manage developers, every one of those still leaves the management to you. A fixed-price studio sells a finished product instead: at minidev.pro an MVP is $5,000 fixed, delivered in 30 days or less, with a full refund plus $2,000 if we miss the agreed timeline.

Toptal matches you with a screened freelancer and bills for their time. People look for alternatives because they want published rates, different vetting, a lower price floor, or someone who owns the whole build. This page covers nine options using only what each company publishes on its own site, checked November 2026. For Toptal's fees against Upwork's, with one MVP costed both ways, see our detailed Toptal vs Upwork fee comparison.

Three Models, and Who Manages the Work

  • Vetted networks (Toptal, Arc, Lemon.io, Gun.io, Turing, Andela) screen developers, match you and bill for time. You direct the work. Andela also offers fully managed teams.
  • Open marketplaces (Upwork, Contra, Fiverr Pro) give you wider choice and lower fees. You vet and you direct. Fiverr Pro sells optional project management.
  • Studios sell a result: a scoped product at an agreed price, with the studio running the build.

A vetting badge does not answer the bigger question: who writes the tickets, reviews the code and owns the deadline? If the answer is nobody, a cheaper hourly rate does not help. Our guide to building an MVP without a technical cofounder covers how to protect yourself on any route, and agency vs freelancer vs in-house covers the general trade-offs.

The Alternatives, One by One

Arc

Arc runs a vetted network for freelance and full-time hires. It says only the top 2% pass: a profile screening (55% pass), a communication assessment (14%) and a technical interview (2%). Its pricing page lists freelancers at $15 to $110+ an hour with a risk-free trial of up to two weeks; full-time hires cost 20% of annual salary, and Arc re-matches you free within the first 3 months if you are dissatisfied. Where it beats us: a named person for as long as you need them, at a published rate.

Lemon.io

Lemon.io describes itself as a vetted marketplace of developers hired as contractors, for startups. Its homepage lists a 1.2% acceptance rate; vetting includes a video questionnaire, a recruiter screening call and a technical interview. It publishes median rates of roughly $23 to $81 an hour (US medians: $46 mid-level, $68 senior, $76 strong senior), paid in advance. Its "no-risk paid trial" is 20 prepaid hours, and it offers a new developer if the first does not meet expectations. Where it beats us: speed to a vetted candidate, with CVs within 24 hours.

Gun.io

Gun.io offers contract, contract-to-hire and full-time placements. Developers pass an algorithmic screening, a work history and background review, and a live technical interview with a senior engineer; about 100 of the roughly 1,000 who join each month are approved. There are no standard prices: each developer's full price is on their profile with "no additional fees," and full-time placements cost 20% of first-year salary. No trial is published; clients typically start with a one-time block of hours. Where it beats us: testing someone on contract before you employ them.

Turing

Turing offers "the top 1% of 3 million+ software engineers" and says it can match senior developers within 4 days. It does not publish rates or describe its vetting on its hiring page. That page promises a no-risk two-week trial; its help center describes a three-week trial, no upfront cost, and billing that starts only after the trial ends. Where it beats us: long-term remote engineers, with a trial before you pay.

Andela

Andela sells to large companies ("Why F500 companies choose Andela") and offers embedded talent or fully managed teams with project managers. It says everyone on its roster is "fully tested and carefully screened" and that English fluency is a prerequisite, but it publishes no acceptance rate, pricing or trial terms. Where it beats us: scale. If you need a team rather than one MVP, Andela is built for that.

Upwork

Upwork is an open marketplace: you post a job, review proposals and hire hourly or fixed price. Its pricing guide lists client fees of 3% or 5% on the Basic plan and 8% or 10% on Business Plus, and says contract initiation fees may also apply. Fixed-price funds sit in a project funds account until you approve the work, and disputes get a nonbinding recommendation, then optional binding arbitration. Its Expert-Vetted badge marks "the top 1% of talent on Upwork." Where it beats us: the widest choice and lowest cost for small, defined tasks. Full fee details are in our Toptal vs Upwork vs agency guide.

Contra

Contra lets companies browse independent professionals and send a contract without posting a job. It says every freelancer is verified with completed projects, earnings history and skill badges, and that hiring is "100% commission-free"; its client help center lists a platform fee per payment from $2, capped at $29, plus a small processing fee. No trial or guarantee is published. Where it beats us: design, no-code and small projects, at almost no platform cost.

Fiverr Pro

Fiverr Pro is a catalog of freelancers "vetted by industry experts" selling defined services, with optional project management and expert sourcing for $199. Fiverr's help center lists a buyer service fee of 5.5%, plus $3.50 on orders under $200, and the Advanced plan is $129 a month. Its guarantee refunds unhappy orders as Fiverr Pro Balance credit, requested within 14 days of completion, excluding hourly orders, and you may not use the delivered work. Where it beats us: a logo, a landing page or a set of designs, bought like a product.

minidev.pro

We are a fixed-price studio. We agree your MVP's scope in writing, build it with senior developers you talk to directly, and deploy it. The base MVP is $5,000 fixed, delivered in 30 days or less, paid 50% upfront and 50% on delivery, with a full refund plus $2,000 if we miss the agreed timeline for reasons other than your scope changes. Add-ons have fixed prices on our published price list. There is no trial: you vet us through our case studies. Where we fit: a founder without a technical lead who needs a finished first version at a known price.

What an MVP Costs at Published Rates

Among the vetted networks, only Arc and Lemon.io publish rate ranges, so here is what they mean for one MVP. We use the same 160 hours of developer time as our Toptal vs Upwork guide: one developer, full time for four weeks. That is our assumption, not theirs.

RatePer hour160 hours
Arc, bottom of freelance range$15160 × $15 = $2,400
Lemon.io, US mid-level median$46160 × $46 = $7,360
Lemon.io, US senior median$68160 × $68 = $10,880
Lemon.io, US strong senior median$76160 × $76 = $12,160
Arc, top of freelance range$110+160 × $110 = $17,600 or more
minidev.pro base MVPFixed$5,000

Two notes. The hourly totals are developer time only: scoping, design, testing and managing the work are yours. And the break-even is simple: $5,000 buys $5,000 ÷ $68 = about 74 hours of a senior developer at Lemon.io's US median. If someone you trust can build your scope in fewer hours, the hourly route is cheaper. Prepaying Lemon.io's 20-hour trial at that rate is 20 × $68 = $1,360, so you can test that before committing. Rates also vary by region; our guide to offshore vs onshore developer rates has sourced figures.

How to Choose

  1. You have a technical lead and want a screened developer fast: Toptal, Arc, Lemon.io or Turing. Run the trial on a real slice of your product.
  2. You want to test someone before employing them: Gun.io's contract-to-hire, or Arc for full-time hires.
  3. You need a team, not a person: Andela.
  4. You can vet people yourself and the task is small: Upwork or Contra.
  5. You want a defined deliverable bought like a product: Fiverr Pro.
  6. Nobody on your side can manage developers, and you need a finished MVP at a known price: a fixed-price studio. Our checklist is in how to choose an MVP development company, and the contract trade-offs are in fixed price vs hourly software development.

When We Are Not the Right Choice

We build fixed-scope first versions. Pick one of the networks above instead if you want staff augmentation for a team you already run, one developer embedded for months, a few hours a week of open-ended help, or a large team. We also do not take consumer mobile games or bids that need 50 or more engineers. If what you need is senior judgment rather than hands, a fractional CTO may be the better buy.

After launch, ongoing work runs on our Growth Partner retainer: from $5,000 a month for 60 hours, month to month with 7 days notice. That is $5,000 ÷ 60 = about $83 an hour, which you can compare directly with the rates above.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best alternative to Toptal?

It depends on who will manage the work. If you have a technical lead and want a pre-screened developer, Arc, Lemon.io, Gun.io and Turing work much like Toptal: they screen, match and bill for time. If you can vet people yourself, Upwork and Contra are open marketplaces with lower fees. If nobody on your side can manage developers, a fixed-price studio such as minidev.pro sells a finished MVP instead of hours.

Which Toptal alternatives publish their rates?

Among the vetted networks, Arc and Lemon.io do. Arc's pricing page lists freelance rates from $15 to $110+ an hour and a 20% fee on full-time hires. Lemon.io publishes median rates of roughly $23 to $81 an hour, with US medians of $46 for mid-level, $68 for senior and $76 for strong senior developers. Toptal, Turing and Andela do not publish rates, and Gun.io shows each developer's full price on their profile.

Which Toptal alternatives offer a risk-free trial?

Arc offers a risk-free trial of up to two weeks on freelance hires. Turing's hiring page offers a no-risk two-week trial, and its help center says billing starts only after the trial ends. Lemon.io sells a 20-hour prepaid trial and replaces a developer who does not meet expectations. Fiverr Pro refunds unhappy orders as account credit. Toptal's own trial runs up to two weeks and is not billed if you are not satisfied.

Is a vetted developer network worth it for an MVP?

Yes, if someone on your side can manage the developer. Vetting cuts the risk of a bad hire, and a trial lets you test fit on real work. But every network on this page bills for time, so scope, management and overruns stay with you. For a first version with a fixed budget and launch date, compare network quotes with a fixed price before you hire.

How much does it cost to build an MVP with a developer from Arc or Lemon.io?

At published rates, 160 hours of developer time costs $7,360 at Lemon.io's US mid-level median of $46 an hour and $10,880 at its senior median of $68. Arc's freelance range of $15 to $110+ an hour puts the same hours at $2,400 to $17,600 or more. Add your own time for scoping, design and testing. At minidev.pro the base MVP is $5,000 fixed.

What is the difference between Toptal and a fixed-price development studio?

Toptal sells access to a screened freelancer's time; a studio sells a finished product. With Toptal you pay a $79 monthly subscription plus the hours, and you direct the work. With a fixed-price studio you agree a written scope and one price before work starts. At minidev.pro an MVP is from $5,000, delivered in 30 days or less, with a full refund plus $2,000 if we miss the agreed date.
