What It Costs to Build an App Like Airbnb, Uber or ChatGPT
Ten well-known apps, each cut down to the smallest version that tests the idea and priced line by line from our published fixed price list. Every page shows a cheap test version, a lean MVP and a bigger version one, with timelines and running costs.
On our price list, a lean MVP of a well-known app costs $8,250 to $18,750 and takes 35 days to 11 weeks. A test version, with some of the work done by hand, costs $5,500 to $8,000 and takes 30 to 35 days. Native iOS and Android apps add $6,000 and 15 build days, which is why the Uber-style and Tinder-style builds sit at the top of the range.
All Ten Apps, Priced
Prices are list totals from our published price list; times are what the calculator shows for the same choices. Each page has the line items, a link that loads the build into the calculator, how the real company started, and what the app costs to run after launch.

How These Prices Are Built
Every build starts from the same $5,000 base MVP: sign-up and login, one core workflow, a database, Stripe checkout or a waitlist, a basic admin view, a landing page, production deployment and 30 days of support, in 30 days or less. Everything else is a fixed add-on with a set number of build days, for example a marketplace (+$3,000, +3 days), real-time features such as live chat (+$2,000, +3 days), subscription billing (+$1,000, +2 days) or native iOS and Android apps (+$6,000, +15 days). Each third-party integration, such as Stripe Connect payouts, maps or text messages, is +$750 and about one day.
The calculator shows a range rather than one number. The low end is the list total rounded to the nearest $500, and the high end allows add-ons to run up to 30% over list, because some details only come out on a call. A call turns the range into one fixed price, paid 50% upfront and 50% on delivery, with a full refund plus $2,000 if we miss the agreed date. The MVP development page has the full terms.
Why Version One Costs a Fraction of the Real App
Airbnb, Uber and Slack are the result of years of work by large teams. None of them launched that way. Each page has a short, sourced section on how the company started, and the pattern repeats: one city, one type of customer, a lot of work done by hand, and a product much smaller than the one people know today.
That is what these prices buy. Version one is the core loop that proves people want the product, for example a guest finding a place, booking and paying, and a host getting paid. Reviews, recommendation engines, loyalty schemes and the rest wait until real users ask for them. If you want the whole product on day one, these prices do not apply, and our guide to building an MVP explains why we would argue against it.
What the Ten Builds Have in Common
- Marketplaces pay for both sides. The Airbnb, Upwork, DoorDash and Zillow builds all add the marketplace option (+$3,000), and most add Stripe Connect so sellers get paid automatically. Our marketplace MVP page covers the cold start, payouts and seller onboarding.
- Live features cost real time. Live chat and live order or ride tracking are +$2,000 and 3 build days, so the test versions avoid them where they can.
- Native apps move the timeline most. Adding iOS and Android apps takes a lean MVP from about 6 or 7 weeks to 9 to 11 weeks. Read web app, PWA or native app for your MVP before you decide, and see mobile app MVP development.
- AI products are cheap to build and priced by use. The ChatGPT-style build is $10,000, but model usage is billed per message, so the running costs grow with every user. Our AI MVP cost guide works that out.
Which One Is Closest to Your Idea?
Two groups of users who pay each other: start with Airbnb, Upwork or DoorDash. Listings that people search and enquire about: Zillow. Anything with live location on a phone: Uber. Software that businesses subscribe to: Calendly or Slack. An assistant built on a language model: ChatGPT. A consumer app built around profiles and matching: Tinder. Paid courses or content: Teachable.
If your idea is a tool for your own team rather than a public app, see custom internal tool development. If none of these fit, the MVP cost calculator prices any combination of the same options.

How much does it cost to build an app like Uber or Airbnb?
On our price list, a lean MVP of a well-known app costs $8,250 to $18,750 and takes about 35 days to 11 weeks. An Airbnb-style marketplace is $11,750, a ChatGPT-style AI app is $10,000 and an Uber-style ride app with native iOS and Android apps is $18,750. A test version of most of them costs $5,500 to $8,000. Each page breaks its price down line by line.
How long does it take to build an app like this?
A test version takes 30 days or less for most of these apps, and about 35 days when it needs live chat or an AI workflow. Lean MVPs take 35 to 50 days on the web, and 9 to 11 weeks with native iOS and Android apps, because the native apps add 15 build days.
Why do agencies quote $50,000 or more for the same app?
The difference is mostly scope and overhead. A quote for an app like Uber often prices much more than version one, with discovery phases and project management on top. These pages price only version one: the core loop, with everything else left out until users ask for it. By our estimate, a typical agency would quote $77,000 to $204,000 for the lean Airbnb-style scope that costs $11,750 here.
Can I build an app like this with no-code tools?
Sometimes. A no-code tool can be enough for a test version with few users, such as listings, bookings or courses. It gets harder with payouts to many sellers, live features, native apps or custom logic. Our guide to no-code vs custom MVPs covers when each one wins, and each page here lists what its test version does by hand.
What does an app like this cost to run each month?
On these pages, hosting, database and email for a small launch come to about $45 to $65 a month. Most of the bill is usage: card fees, payouts, text messages, maps, video or AI model calls, which grow with sales and users. Each page works out one month at a stated level of usage from the providers' published prices, from about $115 to about $2,100 in total.
