How Much Does It Cost to Build an App Like DoorDash?
A food delivery marketplace priced line by line from our published price list: what the first version needs for customers, restaurants and couriers, what it costs to build and run, and how DoorDash began with its founders doing the deliveries.
A test version of a DoorDash-style app costs $5,500 on our price list and takes 30 days or less: restaurant menus, online checkout and order emails, with you or a courier you hire doing the deliveries. The lean MVP, a mobile web app with screens for customers, restaurants and couriers, live order status, SMS updates and automatic payouts, is $13,500 (the calculator shows $13,500 to $16,000) and takes 45 to 50 days.
Adding iOS and Android apps makes it $19,500 and 10 to 11 weeks. By our estimate, a typical agency quote for the lean scope runs $84,000 to $218,000 (not sourced data; see our MVP cost guide).
Food delivery is a marketplace with three sides, not two, which is why it costs more than a shop with a checkout. As in our other cost to build breakdowns, each line below is priced from our published price list, with outside figures listed under sources.
What a DoorDash MVP Actually Needs
The core loop: a customer picks a restaurant, orders and pays; the restaurant accepts and cooks; a courier picks the order up and delivers it; the restaurant and the courier get paid. Six features carry it:
- Menus with item options such as sizes and extras, opening hours and a sold-out switch the restaurant controls.
- Cart and checkout with address search, a delivery-zone check and a delivery fee by distance.
- A live order screen for the restaurant, with a sound when a new order arrives.
- A courier screen: open jobs, accept, picked up, delivered.
- Order status for the customer, updated live and by text message.
- Payouts to restaurants and couriers through Stripe Connect.
Search helps customers find a restaurant or a dish, and the admin view handles refunds, zones and fees.
What the full DoorDash has that version one does not need
- Order batching and route optimization. They pay off at volume. At 50 orders a day, a person assigning couriers does fine.
- Courier scheduling and incentives. A shared shift sheet works for 10 couriers.
- Point-of-sale integrations. Restaurants can run your order screen on a tablet.
- Memberships and promotions. Prove that people order twice first.
How DoorDash Started
DoorDash's 2020 S-1 filing says its journey began on January 12, 2013, when its founders launched a website displaying menus from local restaurants in Palo Alto, California. The first customer ordered prawn pad thai and spring rolls from a nearby Thai eatery. The company was incorporated that year as Palo Alto Delivery Inc.
The founders' own post from October 2013 fills in the manual side. They built the first prototype in a few hours, the first order came in as a phone call about half an hour after launch, and the four of them made the deliveries: "We were students by day, delivery drivers by night." They changed the name to DoorDash in June 2013. Version one was a prototype built in hours, a phone and the founders themselves.
Price Breakdown: Three Versions
The rows in each table sum to a list price, counted in working days. The calculator's range and calendar timeline allow for details that only come up on a call.
1. Test version: $5,500, 30 days or less
| Item | What it covers | Price | Build days |
|---|---|---|---|
| Base MVP | Sign-up, the ordering workflow (menu, cart, order), database, Stripe checkout, admin view, landing page, deployment, 30 days of support | $5,000 | 20 |
| Email automation | Order confirmations to customers and new-order emails to restaurants | +$500 | +1 |
| Total | $5,000 + $500 | $5,500 | 21 |

What you do by hand. You sign up a handful of restaurants near you and enter their menus yourself. Customers order and pay through Stripe checkout, and the restaurant and you both get an email. You, or one courier paid per delivery, pick up and deliver inside a fixed radius for a flat fee, and you pay restaurants weekly by bank transfer. It is the DoorDash founders' setup with better tools, and it answers the question that matters first: do people in your area order again?
2. Lean mobile web MVP: $13,500, 45 to 50 days
| Item | What it covers | Price | Build days |
|---|---|---|---|
| Base MVP | Sign-up, the ordering workflow, database, Stripe payments, admin view, landing page, deployment, 30 days of support | $5,000 | 20 |
| Marketplace | Customer and restaurant sides with their own accounts and screens, plus a courier role | +$3,000 | +3 |
| Real-time | Live order status, the restaurant's new-order screen and courier location while the courier screen is open | +$2,000 | +3 |
| Search and filters | Search restaurants and dishes; filter by cuisine and delivery time | +$750 | +1 |
| Email automation | Receipts and daily order summaries for restaurants | +$500 | +1 |
| Stripe Connect (integration) | Restaurant and courier onboarding and weekly payouts | +$750 | +1 |
| Maps (integration) | Address search, delivery-zone checks and distance-based fees | +$750 | +1 |
| SMS (integration) | "Order accepted" and "courier on the way" texts | +$750 | +1 |
| Total | $5,000 + $3,000 + $2,000 + $750 + $500 + $750 + $750 + $750 | $13,500 | 31 |

It runs in the browser on any phone, so there is nothing to install and no app store review. Restaurants keep the order screen open on a tablet; couriers keep theirs open on a phone during a delivery. The same scope typically draws freelancer quotes of $25,000 to $50,500 and agency quotes of $84,000 to $218,000, by our estimate (the MVP development cost guide shows how we get there).
3. Version 1 with iOS and Android apps: $19,500, 10 to 11 weeks
| Item | What it covers | Price | Build days |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lean mobile web MVP | Everything in the table above | $13,500 | 31 |
| Web + native mobile | React Native apps for iOS and Android alongside the mobile web app | +$6,000 | +15 |
| Total | $13,500 + $6,000 | $19,500 | 46 |

The courier is the main reason to go native: a native app can keep sharing location with the screen off, which brings Apple's location consent rules and Google Play's background location declaration into play. Budget Apple's 99 USD yearly developer membership and Google Play's US$25 one-time fee. Meals are physical goods, and Apple's App Review Guidelines send those to card or Apple Pay payments rather than in-app purchase, so checkout stays on Stripe.
Running Costs After Launch
A month in one small delivery zone, using published prices checked November 2026:
- 15 restaurants, 10 couriers and 1,500 orders (50 a day) at an average of $32 including the delivery fee: 1,500 × $32 = $48,000.
- Restaurants receive $36,000 and couriers $6,000, so you keep $6,000. The 25 accounts are paid weekly: 25 × 4 = 100 payouts.
- 2 texts and 3 emails per order. About 4 address lookups, 1 route and 4 map views on the tracking page per order.
| Service | Published price | This month | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stripe card payments | 2.9% + 30¢ per successful US card payment | 1,500 orders, $48,000 | $1,392 + $450 = $1,842.00 |
| Stripe Connect (you set the fees) | $2 per account paid in a month, plus 0.25% + 25¢ per payout | 25 accounts, 100 payouts, $42,000 | $50 + $105 + $25 = $180.00 |
| Twilio SMS | $0.0083 per segment plus a carrier fee of up to $0.005; $1.15 a month per number | 3,000 segments | 3,000 × $0.0133 + $1.15 = $41.05 |
| Google Maps Platform | 10,000 free events a month per Essentials SKU; then Autocomplete $2.83, Compute Routes $5.00 and Dynamic Maps $7.00 per 1,000 | 6,000 lookups, 1,500 routes, 6,000 map loads | $0 |
| Resend Pro (email) | $20 a month for 50,000 emails | 4,500 emails | $20.00 |
| Supabase Pro + Vercel Pro | From $25 a month + $20 a month | Database, live updates, hosting | $45.00 |
| Total | $2,128.05 |
Stripe: 2.9% × $48,000 = $1,392 and 1,500 × $0.30 = $450. Connect: 25 × $2 = $50, 0.25% × $42,000 = $105 and 100 × $0.25 = $25. Resend's free plan stops at 3,000 emails a month and 100 a day, so this volume needs Pro.
That is $2,128.05 ÷ 1,500 = about $1.42 per order, and $6,000 − $2,128.05 = $3,871.95 of your margin left before marketing and support. Two more costs to plan for:
- Maps grow with you, not at launch. Past the free 10,000 a month, every tracking-page map load costs $7.00 per 1,000 on Google's Dynamic Maps. Load the map only when a customer opens tracking.
- Courier screening is per courier, once. Checkr's Basic check is $29.99 and a motor vehicle record $9.50, so 10 couriers cost 10 × $39.49 = $394.90, plus court and DMV fees passed through at cost.
Timeline: The Lean MVP Week by Week
Seven weeks covers the 45 to 50 days, as long as the scope is settled in week one and decisions do not wait.
- Week 1: scope and design. A Must / Later / Never list, the order states (placed, accepted, ready, picked up, delivered, cancelled), zone and fee rules, key screens.
- Week 2: restaurants. The menu editor with options and the sold-out switch, and the live order screen with sound alerts.
- Week 3: customers. Restaurant list, search, cart, address search with the zone check, and checkout.
- Week 4: couriers. The job list, accepting, picked-up and delivered steps, and location while the screen is open.
- Week 5: money and messages. Stripe Connect onboarding, weekly payouts, SMS and email updates.
- Week 6: admin and dry runs. Refunds, zone and fee settings, and end-to-end test orders with one real restaurant.
- Week 7: launch. A pilot with your first restaurants and couriers, fixes, then open to customers.
What Makes Food Delivery Hard
Three sides, each with a veto. Customers need choice, restaurants need orders and couriers need steady work, and every order touches all three. Start in a zone small enough for a handful of restaurants and couriers to cover lunch and dinner, and expect to deliver some orders yourself, as DoorDash's founders did.
Timing is the product. Send a courier too early and they wait at the counter; too late and the food goes cold. In version one the restaurant marks an order ready and a person assigns couriers with a simple rule. Measure prep times per restaurant before you automate anything.
Menus drift. Prices change and dishes sell out, and every wrong menu becomes a refund. Give restaurants the sold-out switch from day one, and enter the first menus yourself so they start right.
Refunds need an owner. Missing items and late orders will happen. Decide before launch who pays for each (the restaurant, the courier or you) and make refunds one click in the admin view. Stripe charges $15 for each card dispute, so a quick refund is often the cheaper outcome.
When We Are Not the Right Choice
- You are one restaurant and want online ordering for your own menu. You need an ordering page, not a marketplace, and off-the-shelf ordering tools cost less than a custom build.
- You need connections to many point-of-sale systems at launch. Each integration is +$750 on our list, and a long list of them is past a first version.
- You want batching, route optimization and demand forecasting on day one. That is logistics software built on data you do not have yet, and if it needs 50 or more engineers, we are the wrong size.
- You have not checked whether people in your area will order. Step one of our step-by-step MVP guide is validation, and it costs nothing.
If it does fit, fixed-price MVP development is backed by our guarantee: a full refund plus $2,000 if we miss the agreed timeline for reasons other than your scope changes (details in our terms). A ride app shares the live location and payout parts; compare our Uber-style breakdown. Ongoing work after launch runs on the Growth Partner retainer, from $5,000 a month for 60 hours.

How much does it cost to build an app like DoorDash?
On our published price list it costs $5,500 to $19,500: $5,500 for a 30-day test version where you or one courier deliver, $13,500 for a lean mobile web MVP with customer, restaurant and courier screens, live order status, SMS and automatic payouts, and $19,500 with iOS and Android apps. A typical agency quote for the lean scope would be $84,000 to $218,000, by our estimate.
How long does it take to build an app like DoorDash?
30 days or less for the test version, 45 to 50 days for the lean mobile web MVP, and 10 to 11 weeks with native iOS and Android apps. Native apps add two app builds, device testing and store submission. Restaurants can start taking orders on the web version while the apps are built.
Do I need separate apps for customers, restaurants and couriers?
No. In our lean MVP all three are screens in one mobile web app, each behind its own login. Restaurants use it on a tablet, couriers on their phones and customers in any browser. The courier side is the first to need a native app, because a native app can keep sharing location with the screen off.
How do food delivery apps pay restaurants and couriers?
A common setup is Stripe Connect: the customer pays the platform by card, and the platform sends each restaurant its share and each courier their delivery pay. When you set the fees, Connect costs $2 per account paid in a month plus 0.25% + 25¢ per payout, on top of 2.9% + 30¢ per US card payment. Weekly payouts keep the payout count down.
Can I start a food delivery app without couriers?
Yes. In our $5,500 test version you take orders and payments online and deliver them yourself or with one courier paid per delivery, the way DoorDash's founders delivered their first orders in 2013. It tells you whether people in your area order again before you pay for courier screens, dispatch and payouts.
