Quick answer

A test version of an Upwork-style marketplace costs $5,500 on our price list and takes 30 days or less: job posts, proposals, Stripe checkout and email alerts, with freelancer payouts handled by hand. The lean web MVP, with profiles, search, live messaging, file delivery and payments held until the client approves the work, is $13,000 (the calculator shows $13,000 to $15,500) and takes 45 to 50 days.

Adding client teams and a reporting dashboard makes it $16,000 and 50 to 55 days. A Fiverr-style gig marketplace uses the same parts. For comparison, our estimate of a typical agency quote for the lean scope is $82,000 to $214,000 (an estimate, not sourced data; see our MVP cost guide).

The hard part of a freelance marketplace is not the job board. It is the money in the middle. Every price here is a line on our published price list (more apps are in our cost to build breakdowns), and every outside figure has a link in the sources.

What an Upwork MVP Actually Needs

The core loop: a client posts a job, freelancers send proposals, the client hires one and funds the work; the freelancer delivers, the client approves, and the money is released minus your fee. Six features carry it:

  1. Profiles: skills, rate and portfolio files for freelancers; a simple company profile for clients.
  2. Job posts and proposals, or fixed-price gigs if you follow the Fiverr model.
  3. Search and filters by skill, budget and category.
  4. Live messaging with files attached.
  5. Contracts with milestones: fund, submit, approve, release.
  6. Email alerts for new jobs, proposals and milestone changes.

The admin view handles freelancer approvals, disputes and refunds.

What a mature freelance platform has that version one does not need

  • Hourly contracts with time tracking. Fixed-price milestones are simpler to build and to police.
  • Paid bidding. Let freelancers apply free until you have more jobs than applicants.
  • Skill tests and badges. Vet the first freelancers yourself.
  • Automated matching. Send clients a hand-picked shortlist. At small scale it works better anyway.

How Upwork and Fiverr Started

Upwork did not start as one product. Its 2018 S-1 filing says the company was formed when two of the earliest and largest online talent marketplaces, Elance and oDesk, combined in 2014. It was incorporated in December 2013, renamed Elance-oDesk in March 2014, and ran the two platforms separately until it relaunched as Upwork in May 2015 and merged them into one. In 2025, according to its annual report, its platforms and other workforce solutions enabled $4.0 billion of gross services volume.

Fiverr shows the small first version more plainly. Its own blog says co-founders Micha Kaufman and Shai Wininger launched the site in February 2010 from Tel Aviv, and that the services, called gigs, cost a mere $5, which gave the company its name. One fixed price takes quoting, haggling and invoices out of version one, a trick worth copying in any marketplace MVP.

Price Breakdown: Three Versions

Each version is a sum of list prices, with build days counted as working days. The calculator turns that into a range and a calendar timeline.

1. Test version: $5,500, 30 days or less

ItemWhat it coversPriceBuild days

What you do by hand. You invite the first freelancers yourself and check their work before they can apply. Clients post jobs and choose from proposals, or from a shortlist you email them. When a client hires, they pay the agreed price through Stripe checkout, and you pay the freelancer by bank transfer once the client confirms the work. Disputes are a call with both sides. That is fine for a few dozen contracts in one niche, and it shows whether clients come back. Read the section on holding money below before you scale it.

2. Lean web MVP: $13,000, 45 to 50 days

This is the version we recommend: clients and freelancers work without you in the middle, and each milestone's money waits for the client's approval. By our calculator's estimate, a typical freelancer would quote $24,000 to $49,000 for this scope and an agency $82,000 to $214,000; the reasoning is in our MVP development cost guide.

3. Version 1 with client teams and reporting: $16,000, 50 to 55 days

Add these when your buyers are companies: several people hire on one account, and finance wants to see the spend. Our SaaS MVP guide explains how organizations and roles work in a first version.

Running Costs After Launch

A month for a niche marketplace, at published prices checked November 2026. The assumptions:

  • 60 milestone payments averaging $750: 60 × $750 = $45,000.
  • A 10% fee from the freelancer side, so 40 freelancers receive $40,500, one payout per released milestone.
  • US clients and freelancers, 30 new freelancers verified, and enough job alerts to pass the free email tier.
ServicePublished priceThis monthCost
Stripe card payments2.9% + 30¢ per successful US card payment60 payments, $45,000$1,305 + $18 = $1,323.00
Stripe Connect (you set the fees)$2 per freelancer paid in a month, plus 0.25% + 25¢ per payout40 freelancers, 60 payouts, $40,500$80 + $101.25 + $15 = $196.25
Stripe Identity$1.50 per verification30 new freelancers$45.00
Resend Pro (email)$20 a month for 50,000 emailsJob and milestone alerts$20.00
Supabase Pro + Vercel ProFrom $25 a month + $20 a monthDatabase, files, messaging, hosting$45.00
Total$1,629.25

Stripe: 2.9% × $45,000 = $1,305 and 60 × $0.30 = $18. Connect: 40 × $2 = $80, 0.25% × $40,500 = $101.25 and 60 × $0.25 = $15. Identity is counted at full price, although Stripe's first 50 verifications are free.

Your 10% fee is $4,500, so $4,500 − $1,629.25 = $2,870.75 is left. Three levers change that:

  • Bank debits instead of cards. Stripe's ACH Direct Debit is 0.8% with a $5 cap. On a $750 payment, 0.8% is $6, so the cap applies: 60 × $5 = $300 instead of $1,323, and the month costs $300 + $196.25 + $45 + $20 + $45 = $606.25.
  • Freelancers abroad. Cross-border payouts start at 0.25% of payout volume. If a quarter of payouts go to the UK, EEA, Canada or Switzerland, that is from 0.25% × $10,125 = $25.31 a month.
  • Tax forms. If you file 1099 forms for US freelancers through Connect, Stripe charges $2.99 per form e-filed with the IRS and $1.49 per state e-filing. Whether you must file depends on your setup, so ask an accountant.

Timeline: The Lean MVP Week by Week

The 45 to 50 days assume a scope agreed in week one and fast answers from you; every week spent waiting adds a week.

  1. Week 1: scope and design. A Must / Later / Never list, the contract and milestone states (funded, submitted, approved, released, disputed), fee rules and key screens.
  2. Week 2: profiles and posts. Sign-up for both sides, profiles, portfolio uploads and job posts.
  3. Week 3: discovery. Search and filters, proposals and the client's shortlist view.
  4. Week 4: conversations. Live messaging with file attachments and unread alerts.
  5. Week 5: money. Stripe Connect onboarding, funding milestones, holding and releasing funds, and refunds.
  6. Week 6: alerts and admin. Email alerts, freelancer approval and disputes, then test contracts with small real payments.
  7. Week 7: launch. A pilot with your first clients and freelancers, fixes, then open sign-ups.

What Makes a Freelance Marketplace Hard

Holding money is regulated. Escrow has a legal meaning. Upwork's annual report says it provides escrow services through a subsidiary licensed as an internet escrow agent by the California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation. Stripe, by contrast, says it does not provide escrow services; its manual payouts let you hold funds in a freelancer's balance for up to 2 years for accounts in the US and 90 days in most other countries. Build held payments inside those limits, and take legal advice before you call them escrow.

Paying freelancers abroad. Stripe's self-serve cross-border payouts work between platforms and accounts in the US, UK, EEA, Canada and Switzerland. Elsewhere, Stripe points to its Global Payouts product or its sales team. Check where your first freelancers live before you promise worldwide payouts.

Leakage. Once a client finds a good freelancer, both have a reason to move off the platform and skip your fee. Give them reasons to stay: the payment hold, invoices, a record of the work, and a fee that looks small next to that protection.

Disputes need a process before they happen. Decide who rules on a dispute and how fast. Verify freelancers at sign-up, and keep every message and file attached to its contract so the evidence exists when you need it.

When We Are Not the Right Choice

  • You want to hire freelancers, not run a marketplace. Use the existing platforms. Our comparison of Toptal, Upwork and an agency covers their fees.
  • You run a staffing firm with your own bench of contractors. You need an internal tool to track people and placements, not a public marketplace, and that starts from the $5,000 base.
  • You need payroll or employer-of-record services in many countries. Those are regulated services. Partner with a provider instead of building one.
  • You need 50 or more engineers, or every Upwork feature at launch. We build first versions.

When it does fit, our fixed-price MVP development carries the same guarantee as every build: a full refund plus $2,000 if we miss the agreed timeline, unless your scope changes caused the delay (see our terms). Another two-sided marketplace with held payouts is in our Airbnb-style breakdown. Later features can run on the Growth Partner retainer, from $5,000 a month for 60 hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to build an app like Upwork?

On our published price list it costs $5,500 to $16,000: $5,500 for a 30-day test version with job posts, proposals, Stripe checkout and email alerts, $13,000 for a lean web marketplace with search, live messaging, file delivery and payments held until the client approves, and $16,000 with client teams and reporting. For comparison, we estimate a typical agency quote for the lean scope at $82,000 to $214,000.

How long does it take to build an app like Upwork?

30 days or less for the test version, 45 to 50 days for the lean web MVP, and 50 to 55 days with client teams and reporting. Most of the extra time over a basic MVP goes into the second side of the marketplace, live messaging and the payment flow that funds, holds and releases each milestone.

Can I hold a client's payment until the work is approved?

Yes, within limits. With Stripe Connect manual payouts you can hold funds in a freelancer's balance for up to 2 years for accounts in the US and 90 days in most other countries, then release them on approval. Stripe says it does not provide escrow services, and escrow has a legal meaning, so take advice before you use that word.

Is an app like Fiverr cheaper to build than an app like Upwork?

About the same. Upwork-style marketplaces start with a client's job post and freelancer proposals; Fiverr-style ones start with a freelancer's fixed-price gig that a client buys directly. Both need profiles, search, messaging, file delivery and held payments. A gig catalog skips the proposal step, so it is a little simpler, but it uses the same line items on our price list.

How do I pay freelancers in other countries?

With Stripe Connect, self-serve cross-border payouts work between platforms and freelancers in the US, UK, EEA, Canada and Switzerland, with fees starting at 0.25% of payout volume. For freelancers elsewhere, Stripe points to its Global Payouts product or its sales team. Check where your first freelancers live before you choose how to pay them.
