How Much Does an MVP Cost in the UK? 2026 Prices in Pounds
UK contractor day rates, published agency price ranges, the real cost of a permanent hire, three worked examples and the funding UK founders actually use. Every outside figure is sourced and dated.
In 2026 a UK agency typically quotes £10,000 to £60,000 (excluding VAT) for a startup MVP, and funded startups commonly spend £30,000 to £60,000. A UK contractor at the median React day rate of £525 costs about £15,750 to £21,000 for 30 to 40 days of work. A focused fixed-price web MVP from minidev.pro starts at $5,000, about £3,750, and our three worked examples below land between about £7,900 and £9,800.
Search "MVP development cost UK" and most of what you find is agency pages quoting ranges with no sources. This guide pulls together the published numbers we could verify: IT Jobs Watch contractor and salary data, agency pricing pages that state figures, HMRC and GOV.UK rules, and platform price lists. All outside figures are as of October 2026 and listed in Sources.
Where we convert minidev.pro's US dollar prices to pounds, we use the European Central Bank reference rates for 14 October 2026 (1 euro = $1.1195 = £0.84385), which works out at $1 ≈ £0.754. Converted prices are rounded to the nearest £50 and marked "about", because the rate moves daily. For the wider global picture, see our MVP development cost guide for 2026.
UK MVP Price Bands in 2026
The five routes UK founders usually compare, for a first web product with sign-up, one core workflow and payments:
| Route | Published rate or price | Typical MVP total | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| UK freelancer or contractor | React median £525/day (middle half £425 to £638); Node.js median £500/day; outside London median £475/day | About £15,750 to £21,000 for 30 to 40 days of one developer (our arithmetic), plus design if needed | IT Jobs Watch, 6 months to 15 Oct 2026 |
| UK agency | Startup MVP from £10,000, most £10,000 to £25,000; lean web MVP £15,000 to £30,000; funded startups £30,000 to £60,000; London agency basic MVP £12,000 to £25,000 | £10,000 to £60,000 excluding VAT; multi-platform or regulated builds £60,000+ | Magora (Oct 2026), Rocking Tech (Jul 2026), Softomate (Oct 2026) |
| Offshore team | Mid-level developers about $20 to $52/hr in India and $50 to $80/hr in Eastern Europe (about £15 to £39 and £38 to £60) | Depends on hours; add your own time for management, QA and time-zone gaps | Second Talent rate card, Sep 2026 |
| In-house hire | React developer median salary £62,500 (£60,000 outside London), plus 15% employer National Insurance above £5,000 | About £71,000 a year before pension, recruitment and equipment; you keep paying after launch | IT Jobs Watch; GOV.UK employer rates 2026/27 |
| minidev.pro fixed price | From $5,000 (about £3,750) for a focused web MVP; published add-on prices | Our three worked examples below come to about £7,900 to £9,800; the core ships in 30 days or less | Our price list |
Contractor rates are advertised rates from job ads, not invoices. Agency figures come from agencies that sell MVP builds, so treat them as market signals rather than audited averages.
Two patterns stand out. First, UK agencies cluster around £25,000 to £60,000 once you include discovery, design, project management and QA. Rocking Tech gives a useful example: three quotes for the same MVP coming in at about £15,000, £45,000 and £80,000. Second, the gap between routes is mostly overhead, not code. A contractor's day rate buys pure development time; an agency's price includes the people around that time. If you are weighing those two, our agency vs freelancer comparison goes through the trade-offs.
What Drives MVP Cost in the UK
Scope. The biggest lever by far. Every extra user type, workflow or admin screen adds days. A marketplace has two sides to build, so it costs more than a single-sided SaaS tool even when the screens look similar.
Integrations. Each external system (Xero, HubSpot, Google Calendar, an NHS or council API) brings its own authentication, error handling and testing. Rocking Tech prices a CRM connection at £2,000 to £6,000 on its own; our published price is $750 (about £550) per standard integration. Poorly documented or legacy systems cost more everywhere.
AI. Calling a large language model is quick. Making it reliable, with testing and handling of wrong answers, is not. Magora lists an AI proof of concept from £15,000, and its sample AI MVP came to £32,718. You also pay per use for the model API after launch.
UK compliance. Any product holding personal data falls under UK GDPR. If your processing is likely to be high risk, for example large-scale special category data such as health records, the ICO says you need a data protection impact assessment. Selling into the NHS adds the Digital Technology Assessment Criteria (DTAC), which NHS England refreshed with a new form from 6 April 2026, and clinical safety work under DCB0129. Products for regulated care providers often need audit trails and role-based access from day one, which is what we built for a UK care provider in CQC Guard. Rocking Tech estimates £5,000 to £10,000 extra for FCA, NHS or GDPR work beyond the baseline.
Mobile apps. Native iOS and Android roughly doubles the surface you test. Softomate puts a two-platform mobile MVP at £20,000 to £45,000. A responsive web app that works well on phones is usually the cheaper first test.
Design. A clean interface from an existing component system is far cheaper than a bespoke brand system, which is worth paying for mainly when buyers judge trust on looks.
Three Worked Examples in Pounds
These examples use minidev.pro's published add-on prices, converted at $1 ≈ £0.754. They are illustrative: a real quote depends on screens, data and edge cases we only learn on a call, and the calculator shows a range rather than a single number. Build days are working days on top of a 20-day core.
1. A booking marketplace
Customers search local providers, book a slot and pay; providers manage availability and get paid out.
- Core web MVP: $5,000
- Marketplace (two sides, listings, matching): +$3,000
- Search and filters: +$750
- Email automation (confirmations and reminders): +$500
- Two integrations (Stripe Connect payouts, calendar sync): +$1,500
Total: $10,750, about £8,100. 27 build days, roughly five and a half weeks.
2. A B2B SaaS dashboard
Small firms connect their accounting and CRM data and see one dashboard, with team logins and monthly plans.
- Core web MVP: $5,000
- Subscription billing: +$1,000
- Teams and roles: +$1,500
- Analytics dashboard with exports: +$1,500
- Two integrations (for example Xero and HubSpot): +$1,500
Total: $10,500, about £7,900. 28 build days, just under six weeks.
3. An AI document tool
Users upload PDFs, the product pulls out structured data and flags anything it cannot verify, with an audit trail for regulated clients. Our SI Report Analyser for a UK geoenvironmental practice is a real product in this family.
- Core web MVP: $5,000
- AI product as the core: +$3,000
- File processing: +$1,000
- Compliance (audit trails, retention, access controls): +$3,000
- Subscription billing: +$1,000
Total: $13,000, about £9,800. 31 build days, just over six weeks. Model API usage is billed separately by the AI provider.
If your buyer needs a supplier on a specific public-sector framework, if you need a full NHS assurance pack with a named clinical safety officer before anyone uses the product, or if the idea is still untested and a no-code prototype would answer the question, spend your money there first. Our no-code vs custom MVP guide helps with that last call. And if your scope prices above about $20,000 in the calculator, it is usually more than an MVP: launch the core first.
Hidden Costs UK Founders Forget
- Hosting and database. Early-stage costs are small. Vercel Pro is $20 a month per developer seat (the free Hobby plan is for non-commercial use only) and Supabase Pro starts at $25 a month. Expect tens of pounds a month at launch, rising with usage.
- Third-party APIs. Payments (Stripe fees per transaction), email sending, maps and AI models all charge by volume. Budget for them in your unit economics, not just your build.
- App store fees. Apple charges $99 a year for its developer programme; Google Play has a one-time $25 registration fee.
- ICO data protection fee. Most organisations that process personal data must pay it. Since 17 February 2025 it has been £52 a year for micro organisations and £78 for small and medium ones.
- Maintenance. Rocking Tech estimates running costs at 15% to 20% of the build cost each year; Magora's support starts from £1,000 a month.
- VAT. UK agencies usually quote excluding VAT, and the standard rate is 20%. A £40,000 quote can become a £48,000 invoice. Whether VAT applies to your purchase and whether you can reclaim it depends on your VAT registration (the threshold is £90,000 of taxable turnover) and on the supplier. This is general information, not tax advice; ask your accountant.
Ways to Spend Less Without Cutting Quality
- Pick one workflow. Write down the one journey that proves people will pay; park the rest.
- Launch on the web first. Add native apps once you know users come back.
- Use proven services. Stripe for payments, an established auth provider and a managed database cost less than building your own.
- Insist on a fixed price for a fixed scope. Day-rate billing is fair, but it puts the risk of slow progress on you.
- Defer bespoke design and heavy integrations unless your first customers cannot buy without them.
- Own your code. Make sure the contract hands over the repository and documentation, so phase two is not locked to one supplier.

UK Funding Options for an MVP
Innovate UK Smart grants: paused. Innovate UK paused its open Smart grants competition in January 2025. In December 2025 a DSIT minister told Parliament the programme "has been paused while Innovate UK redesigns its funding programmes", pointing to the £130 million Growth Catalyst scheme for growth sectors instead. We found no reopening as of October 2026. Check the Innovation Funding Service for current, usually sector-specific competitions before you plan around a grant.
SEIS. The Seed Enterprise Investment Scheme lets an early-stage company raise up to £250,000 from investors, provided it has gross assets of no more than £350,000 and fewer than 25 full-time equivalent employees when the shares are issued. Investors get 50% income tax relief on up to £200,000 a year, which is why UK angels often ask whether you have SEIS advance assurance from HMRC. Advance assurance is optional but widely expected.
EIS. The Enterprise Investment Scheme is the follow-on: investors get 30% income tax relief on up to £1 million a year (£2 million if at least £1 million goes into knowledge-intensive companies). It matters more for the round after your MVP.
Start Up Loans. The government-backed scheme offers personal loans for business purposes of up to £25,000 per director. From 6 April 2026 the fixed interest rate rose from 6% to 7.5% a year, and eligibility widened to businesses trading for up to five years.
Some software development work may also qualify for R&D tax relief. The rules are detailed, so get an accountant's view before you count on it.

How much does an MVP cost in the UK?
Published UK agency prices for a startup MVP mostly sit between £10,000 and £60,000 in 2026, with funded startups commonly spending £30,000 to £60,000. A UK contractor at the median React day rate of £525 costs roughly £15,750 to £21,000 for 30 to 40 days of work. A focused fixed-price web MVP from minidev.pro starts at $5,000, about £3,750.
How much does app development cost in the UK?
UK agency guides put an iOS and Android MVP at £20,000 to £45,000 and a full production app or platform at £25,000 to £60,000. On top of the build, Apple charges $99 a year for its developer programme and Google Play a one-time $25 registration fee. A responsive web app is usually the cheaper first step.
What is the day rate for a UK developer in 2026?
IT Jobs Watch shows a median advertised UK contract rate of £525 a day for React and £500 a day for Node.js in the six months to 15 October 2026. The middle half of React rates ran from £425 to £638 a day, and the median outside London was £475.
Do UK agency quotes include VAT?
Usually not. UK agencies tend to quote prices excluding VAT, and the standard rate is 20%. Whether you pay VAT on a supplier's invoice, and whether you can reclaim it, depends on your situation and the supplier's, so check with an accountant before you budget.
Can I get a grant to build my MVP in the UK?
The open Innovate UK Smart grants competition has been paused since January 2025 and we found no reopening as of October 2026. Most UK founders fund an MVP from savings, a Start Up Loan of up to £25,000 per director, or angel money raised under SEIS, which lets a company raise up to £250,000.
Is it cheaper to hire a developer or use an agency for an MVP?
For a single MVP, usually neither a permanent hire nor a large agency is cheapest. A UK React developer has a median salary of £62,500 plus 15% employer National Insurance, and you carry that cost every month. Agencies add project management and margin. A senior contractor or a small fixed-price studio is typically the lowest total for a first version.
